History
Our school first opened in 1878 in a hired hall in Dublin Street and the present site was cleared of bush for a new school in 1879. The earliest school on this site faced Herbert Street. The headmaster, Mr George Hardie, lived in the residence on the corner of Chelmsford and Windsor Streets and went to school along a narrow track between felled trees!
After the original school was burnt down in 1889 a new building was put up in 1890. The only remnant of that school is the bell that hangs in the foyer of the present administration block.
At one time North School was the largest primary school in Southland with a roll well in excess of 700, but with the opening of Rosedale Intermediate, Waverley Park and Salford Schools the numbers have reduced. We now have from 250 - 305 children at school.
